Tyler Conklin's path to the National Football League reflects an unconventional journey in professional football. A two-sport athlete in high school, Conklin began his collegiate career playing basketball at Division II Northwood University before transferring to Central Michigan, where he walked onto the football team. Initially recruited as a defensive end, Conklin advocated to play tight end, a decision that shaped his football trajectory. He concluded his Central Michigan career with 83 receptions for 1,159 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Conklin's college tenure included overcoming significant adversity. During a training camp drill, he sustained a Jones fracture in his left foot but returned after rehabilitation to record 10 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns in his first game back, earning the John Mackey Tight End of the Week Award. He finished the season with 35 receptions for 504 yards and five touchdowns in eight games, earning Third-team All-MAC honors. At the NFL Combine, Conklin ranked among the top tight ends in several athletic drills, demonstrating the athleticism developed through his basketball background.

Conklin was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. He spent his initial seasons contributing primarily on special teams before increasing his production, recording 61 receptions for 593 yards and three touchdowns in his final season with the Vikings. He then signed a three-year contract with the New York Jets, where he played in all 17 games of his first season, posting 58 receptions for 552 yards and three touchdowns. Over three seasons with New York, Conklin accumulated 170 receptions for 1,622 yards and seven touchdowns in 50 games, ranking among the top tight ends in receptions during that period.

Conklin has established himself as a consistent presence at tight end, becoming one of four players at the position to record at least 50 catches and 400 receiving yards in four consecutive seasons. His reliability was highlighted when he was recognized as one of only two tight ends with at least 50 targets to not drop a pass in a season, according to Pro Football Focus. After a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers, Conklin signed with the Detroit Lions, returning to Michigan.
