Ty M. Carter Biography
Ty Michael Carter is a retired United States Army staff sergeant and Medal of Honor recipient known for his extraordinary heroism during the 2009 Battle of Kamdesh in Afghanistan. Carter enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2008 after earlier service in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was deployed with the 4th Infantry Division’s cavalry units. During a sustained attack on Combat Outpost Keating, he repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire to resupply ammunition, provide covering fire, administer first aid, and carry a wounded comrade to safety — actions for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in 2013.
Carter left active duty in 2014 and has since become a motivational speaker and mental health advocate, sharing his experiences to help destigmatize post‑traumatic stress (which he and others prefer to call PTS) and to support fellow veterans and service members. He travels the United States speaking about resilience, leadership, and mental health awareness while pursuing an associate degree in firearms science and technology. Carter resides in Texas with his family, and his outreach work continues to inspire audiences nationwide.
