Tom Cech Biography
Tom Cech is a Nobel Prize‑winning American chemist and Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he has been a faculty member since 1978. He shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking discovery that RNA molecules can act as catalysts—revealing that RNA is not just a passive carrier of genetic information but can catalyze chemical reactions essential to life. This transformative insight fundamentally reshaped understanding in molecular biology and opened new avenues for research into the origin of life and the roles of RNA in cells.
In addition to his Nobel‑winning work, Cech’s research has contributed to discoveries about telomerase, the enzyme that maintains chromosome ends and has critical implications for aging and cancer biology. He has held leadership roles including President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2000–09) and Director of the BioFrontiers Institute at CU Boulder, and continues to mentor students and advance interdisciplinary science. His contributions have earned numerous honors including the National Medal of Science, the Lasker Award, and election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
