Toby E. Stuart

Toby E. Stuart is the Leo Helzel Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. Stuart serves as faculty director of the Berkeley-Haas Entrepreneurship Program, faculty director of the Institute for Business Innovation, and is a distinguished teaching fellow. He received his first chaired, full professorship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business at age 32. Stuart earned a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and holds an A.B., summa cum laude, in economics from Carleton College.

Stuart's academic career includes positions at leading business schools. He was the Charles Edward Wilson Professor at Harvard Business School, the Art Samberg Professor and faculty director of the Lang Center for Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School, and the Fred Steingraber-A.T. Kearney Professor of Leadership & Strategy at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Stuart has also served on the faculty of the Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship group at MIT Sloan School of Management. At Harvard Business School and Columbia Business School, he was course head for the masters-level required courses in entrepreneurship and strategy formulation.

Stuart's research examines social networks and their role in entrepreneurship, innovation, and organizational strategy. His academic work focuses on firm strategy across industries, the formation and governance of strategic alliances, organizational design, new firm formation in established companies, venture capital networks, and the influence of networks in new firm creation. Stuart is the co-founder of a technology company, sits on multiple corporate boards, and has published extensively on social status and social network dynamics. He served as department editor for entrepreneurship and innovation at Management Science and has held editorial roles at Strategic Management Journal, American Journal of Sociology, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Research Policy.

Stuart has received several honors in entrepreneurship and management research, including the Kauffman Prize Medal for Distinguished Research in Entrepreneurship. He has received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence at Columbia Business School, the Award for Teaching Excellence at Cornell University, and is a multiple recipient of the Cheit Award for Teaching Excellence at Berkeley-Haas. He has also won the Administrative Science Quarterly's scholarly contribution award and is a research fellow at Oxford University's Center for Corporate Reputation.

In addition to his academic work, Stuart is the author of the book "Anointed," published by Simon & Schuster. The book explores how social phenomena shape lives, prospects, and futures, focusing on the process by which individuals or institutions confer status. "Anointed" was longlisted for the Porchlight Business Book Awards in the Personal Development & Human Behavior category. Kirkus Reviews described the book as an informative and engaging exploration of influential social status dynamics.
