Thomas Hoerr

Thomas R. Hoerr, Ph.D., is a recognized figure in educational leadership, with extensive experience in school administration, educator development, and progressive learning strategies. Hoerr began his career as a classroom teacher before serving as a principal in the School District of University City, where he collaborated with faculty to improve student performance amid changing demographics. He later became head of New City School in St. Louis, an institution committed to progressive education and diversity, serving in that role for 34 years before becoming Emeritus Head of School.

During his tenure, New City School implemented the theory of multiple intelligences and established the first Multiple Intelligences Library. The school hosted several conferences on multiple intelligences and published related educational resources. Hoerr is currently a Scholar in Residence at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, teaching in the Educational Leadership program and preparing future principals. He also led the ISACS New Heads Network and founded the Non-Profit Management Program at Washington University in St. Louis. Hoerr holds a doctorate in educational planning and policy development from Washington University in St. Louis and has received honorary doctorates from Harris Stowe State University and the University of St. Louis–Missouri.

Hoerr is the author of several books, including "The Principal as Chief Empathy Officer: Creating a Culture Where Everyone Grows," "Taking Social Emotional Learning Schoolwide: The Formative Five Success Skills for Students and Staff," "The Formative Five: Fostering Grit, Empathy, and Other Success Skills Every Student Needs," "Becoming a Multiple Intelligences School," "The Art of School Leadership," "School Leadership for the Future," and "Fostering Grit: How Do I Prepare My Students for the Real World?" He has contributed more than 170 articles to educational publications, including the "The Principal Connection" column in Educational Leadership Magazine, and writes a blog for ASCD.

Central to Hoerr's work is the belief that schools should support the development of the whole child. He advocates for educational approaches that emphasize not only academic achievement but also social-emotional learning, including empathy, self-control, integrity, embracing diversity, and grit—skills he refers to as the Formative Five. In "The Principal as Chief Empathy Officer," Hoerr outlines how prioritizing empathy can reduce conflicts, strengthen school communities, and enhance student outcomes.

Hoerr has presented at conferences and schools across the United States and internationally, addressing topics such as the Formative Five, grit, faculty collegiality, educational leadership, multiple intelligences, school culture, and governance. Through his work with trustees, educators, and administrators, Hoerr focuses on collaborative problem-solving and constructivist approaches to professional development. His contributions continue to influence educational leadership, school culture, and the integration of social-emotional learning in schools.
