Stuart Buck

Stuart Buck is a leader in the movement to improve scientific integrity and research reproducibility. He serves as executive director of the Good Science Project and as a senior advisor to the Social Science Research Council. Buck's career focuses on advancing rigorous, transparent, and trustworthy scientific research, earning recognition across academia, government, and the media.

As vice president at Arnold Ventures for nine years, Buck funded research demonstrating that scientific studies are often irreproducible, including the Reproducibility Projects in Psychology and Cancer Biology. In his role as a grantmaker, he helped launch organizations such as the Center for Open Science, Vivli, the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford, the Stanford Center for Reproducible Neuroscience, the Yale Collaboration on Research Integrity and Transparency, and the Evidence-Based Medicine DataLab at Oxford. He also contributed to the creation of the TOP Guidelines, widely adopted standards for scientific publication.

Buck has advised government agencies and research organizations, including DARPA, IARPA, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the White House Social and Behavioral Sciences Team, on research rigor and transparency. He has published in journals such as Science and BMJ on improving research accuracy. Buck has also advised the Government Accountability Office on federally funded research, consulted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on reproducibility conferences, and provided guidance to the John Oliver show for an episode on scientific reproducibility. He has served as a reviewer for Science, Bioinformatics, and BMJ, and was a member of the executive committee of the Harvard Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center.

Buck is the author of "Acting White," a book on the history of education in the African-American community, published by Yale University Press. He has recorded a classical guitar album titled "From Mozart to Tchaikovsky: A Classical Guitar Collection for Children." His work on research transparency and reproducibility has been featured in Wired, New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, and The Economist.

Buck holds a Ph.D. in education policy from the University of Arkansas, where he studied econometrics, statistics, and program evaluation; a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of Harvard Law Review; and bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance from the University of Georgia. This combination of legal training, quantitative expertise, and knowledge of scientific methodology positions Buck as a prominent voice on the challenges and reforms in modern science.
