Stephen A. Smith Biography
Stephen A. Smith is a renowned sports commentator, television personality, and sports journalist. He stands as an executive producer on ESPN's "First Take," engaging in daily sports debates and discussions. He served as a regular analyst on "NBA Countdown," an established pregame show on ESPN and ABC, and he hosted the show "NBA in Stephen A's World," providing an alternate perspective for selected ESPN NBA games. Smith co-owns Mr. SAS Productions, the company that co-produces these shows, along with ESPN and Omaha Productions. Since 2018, Smith has played a key role in ESPN's studio programming, heading various "SportsCenter" specials. In 2025, he announced he will remain on "First Take" but will step back from his regular role on "NBA Countdown" to pursue political commentating. He has shared his views on shows like "The View," "Hannity," and "Real Time With Bill Maher."
Smith is the author of the book "Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes," which has successfully hit the New York Times bestseller list. He also hosts a podcast named "The Stephen A. Smith Show" on iHeartRadio, where he gives insightful analysis on a range of current events spanning politics, entertainment, social issues, business, and more. Smith is set to add two more radio shows to his roster in the fall of 2025: a daily sports talk show on weekdays and a weekly current events, pop culture, and commentary program, both on SiriusXM. Smith's broadcasting career commenced in 1999 at CNN/SI, and he joined ESPN as an analyst for "NBA Shootaround" in 2003.
In addition to his work on ESPN, Smith has also ventured into acting, making his debut on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital" in 2007. He has appeared in films such as "I Think I Love My Wife," "Rumble," and "Creed III," and has starred in TV shows like "Luke Cage" and "Black-ish."
A former general sports columnist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Smith earned a basketball scholarship to Winston-Salem State University, an historically black university. He regularly participates in HBCU Week, serving as an ambassador for the event.
