Snarky Puppy

Snarky Puppy is an American jazz fusion band led by bassist Michael League, recognized for its innovative blend of jazz, rock, world music, and funk. The ensemble has received multiple Grammy Awards and is known for its dynamic approach to contemporary instrumental music. Formed by League as a group of college friends at the University of North Texas Jazz Studies program, Snarky Puppy evolved through collaborations with the Dallas gospel and R&B community, shaping a sound that incorporates diverse musical influences.

The group has expanded into an international collective with up to 25 members in regular rotation. Members contribute to the broader music industry as sidemen and producers for artists such as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, D'Angelo, Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta. The band’s membership reflects a convergence of Black and white American music cultures, with representation from Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico.

Snarky Puppy’s discography includes Grammy-winning albums such as "Family Dinner – Volume 1" with vocalist Lalah Hathaway, "Sylva" in collaboration with Metropole Orkest, "Culcha Vulcha," "Live at the Royal Albert Hall," and "Empire Central." The group’s work with Metropole Orkest on "Sylva" and "Somni" highlights its commitment to artistic evolution within the jazz fusion genre. "Empire Central" pays tribute to the band’s Dallas roots, recorded live at Deep Ellum Art Company.

With the album "GroundUP," Snarky Puppy established its own label, GroundUP Music, supporting emerging artists and expanding its influence in the jazz and world music communities. The GroundUP Music Festival in Miami features performances by Snarky Puppy and a curated lineup of artists, reinforcing the band’s role in live music and festival culture.

Snarky Puppy is recognized for its extensive touring schedule and live performances, which have contributed to its reputation in the global jazz and instrumental music scene. The band continues to explore new directions in jazz fusion, engaging audiences worldwide with its collaborative and genre-defying approach.
