Skye Fitzgerald

Skye Fitzgerald is a two-time Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker recognized for his work in humanitarian cinema. An independent filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon, Fitzgerald has explored individual stories amid political and social tensions for more than 20 years. He has documented the effects of political unrest, poverty, and violence on people in over 20 countries. Fitzgerald holds a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Oregon University and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Oregon.

Fitzgerald is known for the "Humanitarian Trilogy," a series of short documentary films examining the global refugee crisis. "50 Feet from Syria" focuses on doctors working on the Syrian border and was voted onto the Oscar shortlist. "Lifeboat" documents search and rescue operations off the coast of Libya and was nominated for an Academy Award and a national Emmy Award. "Hunger Ward," an Academy Award nominee, documents the impact of war and famine in Yemen on children, families, and health care workers. The last two films of the trilogy were both Mountainfilm Commitment Grant recipients and nominated for Academy Awards. His films have screened at major international venues, including a premiere of "Hunger Ward" at the Peace Palace in The Hague in partnership with the United Nations and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Fitzgerald's career extends beyond the trilogy. Designated a Fulbright Research Scholar, he directed the film "Bombhunters" in Cambodia and has collaborated with organizations such as the Sundance Institute, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the State Department, the Paul Robeson Fund, and Mountainfilm. As a director of photography, Fitzgerald has lensed work for major broadcast and cable outlets including Dateline, VICE, Mercy Corps, CNN, and the Discovery, Travel, History, and Animal Planet channels. His projects include "Speed of Rust" and "Chasing Roo," which was shortlisted for an Oscar.

Fitzgerald founded Spin Film to document unfolding crises with the intent to deepen empathy and understanding. His films have been recognized for their accurate portrayals of social issues by publications including Variety, LA Weekly, Voice of America, and The Oregonian. Fitzgerald is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Documentary Branch) and was inducted as an honorary member into SAMS (Syrian American Medical Society) for his work with Syrian refugees. He was also named a Distinguished Alumnus at Eastern Oregon University for his contributions to documentary filmmaking. Fitzgerald frequently addresses audiences on the role of documentary filmmaking in raising awareness of humanitarian crises and advancing social change.
