Simon Singh

Simon Singh is a British author, journalist, and television producer known for making complex scientific and mathematical concepts accessible to broad audiences. Singh completed a doctorate in experimental particle physics at Cambridge University, conducting research at CERN in Geneva as part of the UA2 collaboration, which contributed to the discovery of the W and Z bosons. After returning to England, Singh joined the BBC Science and Features Department, working as a producer and director on programs such as "Tomorrow's World" and "Horizon."

Singh directed the BAFTA Award-winning documentary "Fermat's Last Theorem," which explored a longstanding mathematical problem and aired in the United States as part of the NOVA series under the title "The Proof." The story became the subject of his first book, also titled "Fermat's Last Theorem," which became a No. 1 bestseller in the United Kingdom and was translated into multiple languages. Singh continued to explore mathematics and cryptography in "The Code Book," a history of cryptography from ancient Egypt to the digital age. This work led to his return to television with "The Science of Secrecy," a five-part series for Channel 4. Singh has also authored "Big Bang," a history of cosmology, co-authored "Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial" with Edzard Ernst, and written "The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets," which examines the mathematics embedded in the popular sitcom.

Singh's career includes advocacy for scientific integrity and evidence-based thinking. After publishing the column "Beware the Spinal Trap" in The Guardian, Singh faced a libel lawsuit from the British Chiropractic Association. He successfully appealed for the right to rely on the defense of fair comment, leading to the withdrawal of the lawsuit. This experience motivated Singh to help launch the Campaign for Libel Reform, contributing to changes in defamation law in the United Kingdom.

Singh has received recognition for his contributions to science communication and mathematics education, including being named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to science, technology, and engineering in education and science communication. He was the inaugural recipient of the Lilavati Award and received the IMA-LMS Christopher Zeeman Medal for excellence in the communication of mathematics, with specific mention of his work in television, published books, and contributions to mathematics education. Singh has appeared in theater shows in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and New York, and has delivered talks at venues such as the Hammersmith Apollo.

Singh founded the Good Thinking Society, a nonprofit organization promoting rationality, skepticism, and scientific literacy through campaigns and public outreach. He also launched "Parallel," an online mathematics platform designed to inspire and challenge young learners. Singh is credited with advancing the narrative nonfiction genre, blending storytelling techniques with factual writing, a style influenced by his background in television.
