Silvia Vasquez-Lavado Biography
Silvia Vasquez-Lavado is a trailblazing force of resilience, storytelling, and transformation. A humanitarian, mountaineer, technologist, author, and social entrepreneur, Vasquez-Lavado became the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest—and in 2018, the first openly gay woman in the world to complete the Seven Summits, climbing the highest mountain on each continent. Through her courage and vulnerability, she has redefined what it means to overcome adversity and lead with heart.
Born and raised in Peru, Vasquez-Lavado is a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, women’s empowerment, and survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking. In 2015, she founded Courageous Girls, a nonprofit dedicated to helping survivors reclaim their voice and power through healing journeys in nature, education, and leadership development.
Her work has impacted hundreds around the world and is now entering a bold new chapter. Vasquez-Lavado is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize rural education in the Amazon using AI—bridging the digital divide while fostering environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
As a technologist and business leader, Vasquez-Lavado built a distinguished career at companies like eBay and PayPal, where she led global SAP deployments and launched Centers of Excellence, including one of the first tech hubs in India fully staffed by women. She was named one of CNET’s Most Influential Latinos in Tech and honored by Fortune Magazine as one of their Corporate Heroes.
Vasquez-Lavado’s memoir, "In the Shadow of the Mountain," is an award-winning, internationally bestselling book translated into 11 languages. It is currently being adapted into a major motion picture starring Selena Gomez. Her story was also featured on the Apple TV+ series "Gutsy," hosted by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.
