Sheyann Webb-Christburg

Sheyann Webb-Christburg is recognized for her contributions to the American civil rights movement, particularly as the youngest participant in the Selma voting rights campaign. Known as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Smallest Freedom Fighter, Webb-Christburg began her involvement at age 8, participating in the historic march across Alabama's Edmund Pettus Bridge, which became known as Bloody Sunday. This event marked a pivotal moment in the struggle for voting rights, as peaceful demonstrators faced violent opposition while advocating for Black voter enfranchisement in a state with a history of voter suppression.

Before the events of Bloody Sunday, Webb-Christburg attended segregated public schools in Dallas County, Alabama, and was among the first Black children to integrate an all-white school, where she experienced significant adversity. These formative experiences influenced her lifelong commitment to justice and youth empowerment.

Webb-Christburg is the co-author of "Selma, Lord, Selma: Girlhood Memories of the Civil Rights Days," written with Rachel West Nelson and Frank Sikora. The book details her experiences during the Selma-to-Montgomery march and her interactions with civil rights leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jonathan Daniels, Viola Liuzzo, and Rev. James Reed. The story was adapted into a film produced by Walt Disney Television, which aired on ABC and received a nomination for Best Television Mini Series by the NAACP Image Awards. Both the book and film have contributed to public understanding of the civil rights movement and Webb-Christburg's role within it.

After graduating from Tuskegee University, Webb-Christburg founded KEEP Productions Youth Development Mentoring and Modeling Program in Montgomery. The program focuses on youth development, leadership, and empowerment, aiming to help young people build self-confidence and develop productive life skills. Through her work, Webb-Christburg has supported thousands of youth in achieving personal and academic success. She has also been honored with a Congressional Gold Medal.

Webb-Christburg regularly speaks at organizations, colleges, government agencies, and conventions nationwide. Her presentations address civil rights history, leadership, youth empowerment, and the ongoing pursuit of justice, offering firsthand accounts of the Selma movement and Dr. King's leadership. Webb-Christburg continues to connect historical lessons to contemporary challenges, contributing to ongoing conversations about civil rights and social justice.
