Sheila Grace Newsom, MD, MA

Dr. Sheila Grace Newsom, MD, MA, is a physician, veteran, author, and founder of She-Rises. A former U.S. Army paratrooper, Dr. Newsom’s life journey embodies resilience, transformation, and leadership at the intersections of medicine, military service, and gender identity. A graduate of West Point and Ranger School, she served as an airborne infantry officer before transitioning to medicine, where she built a distinguished career in nephrology and trauma care.

At age 63, Dr. Newsom answered an undeniable calling to transition, navigating the profound psychological, spiritual, and societal challenges of gender transformation. With a master’s degree in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, she explores identity through a Jungian lens, weaving myth, medicine, and personal experience into her work. She founded Finding Metis, a ketamine-based trauma therapy practice, and She-Rises, a unique women’s mental and wellness venue. Dr. Newsom authored "A Calling from the Bones," which details her late-in-life transition.

An advocate for transgender rights, mental health, and the integration of psychedelics in healing, Dr. Newsom has spoken to groups at SXSW, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Kuya, a wellness destination in Austin.
