Shaun M. Anderson

Dr. Shaun M. Anderson is a scholar, author, and public intellectual whose work examines the intersection of sport, race, and social justice. Anderson holds the Knight Chair in Sports, Race, and Media at the Hussman School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a distinction within journalism and media education. He earned a doctorate in sport communication from West Virginia University, with research focusing on activism, strategic communication, and justice in sports. As a graduate of a historically Black college or university, Anderson brings a community-oriented perspective to his academic work.

Initially pursuing a career in sports broadcasting, Anderson shifted his focus to the societal impact of sports after collaborating with a Major League Baseball team on youth outreach programs. He studies sport as a reflection of society and a platform for addressing business, politics, racial injustice, environmental sustainability, and other social issues. Anderson has consulted for global brands such as Nike, PBS, Athletic Greens, Major League Baseball, The Aspire Group, and the children's book series "Ordinary People Change the World."

Anderson is the author of the book "The Black Athlete Revolt: The Sport Justice Movement in the Age of #BlackLivesMatter," which examines how Black athletes have used their influence to drive social change and reform. The book explores the history and evolution of Black athlete activism, its significance during the civil rights movement, the commodification of athletes in the 1990s, and the role of athletes in the age of #BlackLivesMatter. The book has been recognized by publications including Kirkus Review, Publisher's Weekly, Choice, and Sports Business Journal.

Anderson has been recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine for his work in leveraging sport to promote social change. He is a certified anti-bias trainer with the Anti-Defamation League and advises national leaders in Sri Lanka on sport tourism and justice-based initiatives. Anderson has provided commentary for media outlets such as ESPN, NBC, The Tavis Smiley Show, "Colors: A Dialogue on Race in America," Huffington Post, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Anderson is committed to engaged scholarship, building partnerships with communities to address social issues and advance public interests. In addition to teaching and advocacy, he collaborates with UNC Hussman faculty on educational resources in sports communication. As Knight Chair, Anderson works to connect students with industry, research, and global opportunities, and to expand the school's sports communication curriculum and industry partnerships. His work continues to influence conversations about sport and society, sports activism, and diversity in sports media.
