Scott Aaronson

Scott Aaronson is a leading quantum computing theorist known for his contributions to computational complexity and quantum information science. He holds the Schlumberger Centennial Chair of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin, where his research focuses on computational complexity theory and quantum computing. Aaronson earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Waterloo before joining the faculty at MIT. He later became the founding director of the Quantum Information Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Aaronson has demonstrated how computational complexity theory can yield new insights into quantum physics and has clarified the capabilities and limitations of quantum computers. His foundational work on quantum supremacy established the theoretical basis for experiments that provide evidence of quantum computers' exponential speedups without requiring a fully fault-tolerant quantum computer. Aaronson is recognized for his research and for his widely read blog "Shtetl-Optimized." He also created Complexity Zoo, an online encyclopedia of computational complexity theory.

Aaronson has contributed to the theoretical foundations of AI safety at OpenAI, applying rigorous theoretical approaches to artificial intelligence and technology ethics. His honors include the ACM Prize in Computing, the Tomassoni-Chisesi Prize in Physics, a Simons Investigator Award, and the Alan T. Waterman Award of the National Science Foundation. He has been elected as an ACM Fellow for contributions to quantum computing and computational complexity, and to the National Academy of Sciences.
