Sam Esmail is an Egyptian-American film and television writer, director, and producer known for his work in psychological thrillers and technology-driven storytelling. Esmail graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in directing. He developed his skills in post-production while writing screenplays, with early works such as "Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations" and "Norm the Movie" earning recognition on the Black List, an annual survey highlighting notable unproduced screenplays in the film industry.
Esmail made his feature directorial debut with "Comet" before creating the television series "Mr. Robot" for USA Network. As creator, executive producer, head writer, and director for much of the series, Esmail played a central role in shaping the show's narrative and visual style. "Mr. Robot" received critical acclaim for its depiction of hackers, corporate corruption, and societal issues, earning the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama, a Peabody Award, multiple Primetime Emmy nominations, and a Writers Guild of America Award for Best New Series. The series became known for its exploration of cybersecurity, digital culture, and mental health.
After "Mr. Robot," Esmail established Esmail Corp and entered into an exclusive partnership with Universal Content Productions. He produced and directed the first season of "Homecoming" for Amazon Prime Video, a psychological thriller that was noted for its cinematic approach and unique visual elements. Esmail's producing credits also include "Gaslit," "Angelyne," and "The Resort," reflecting his versatility in television production and his focus on complex characters and contemporary themes. His personal experiences with social anxiety disorder and his background as a second-generation American with Egyptian heritage have influenced his work, particularly in the portrayal of alienation and identity.
In film, Esmail wrote and directed "Leave the World Behind" for Netflix, an apocalyptic thriller based on Rumaan Alam's novel and featuring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Mahershala Ali. The film addresses themes of societal breakdown and technology's impact on human relationships. Warner Bros. acquired his thriller "Panic Carefully," described as reminiscent of "Mr. Robot" and "The Silence of the Lambs."
