Roy Schoenberg

Dr. Roy Schoenberg, M.D., M.P.H., is a physician-entrepreneur recognized for his contributions to digital health and telemedicine. Schoenberg holds an M.D. from The Hebrew University and an M.P.H. in Healthcare Management from Harvard. He served as a senior associate at the Center for Clinical Computing at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and participated in the Harvard-MIT Fellowship Program in Clinical Informatics.

Before his work in telehealth, Schoenberg founded the healthcare management software firm CareKey, where his brother Ido served as CEO. Following the acquisition of CareKey by TriZetto, he held the position of senior vice president and chief internet solutions officer at TriZetto.

Schoenberg co-founded Amwell, a digital care company, and played a key role in taking the company public. Under his leadership, Amwell expanded to become one of the largest digital health networks, connecting patients, clinicians, and payers through technology-enabled healthcare. The Amwell platform grew to include more than 100,000 active clinicians and served millions of patients worldwide. Schoenberg also led the development of the Amwell Converge platform, designed to support integrated in-person and digital care experiences.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Schoenberg collaborated with payers, providers, and regulators to maintain healthcare delivery through telehealth solutions. He has been a prominent voice on the future of virtual care and has overseen strategic acquisitions, including Avizia and Aligned Telehealth, to expand Amwell’s acute care and telepsychiatry services. Amwell also secured a $100 million investment from Google in a private placement concurrent with its initial public offering.

Schoenberg’s influence extends to policy and industry standards. He was appointed to the Federation of State Medical Boards' taskforce that developed guidelines for the appropriate use of telemedicine. He has been recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare, received the American Telemedicine Association Industry award for leadership in telemedicine, and was named Entrepreneur of the Year in New England by EY. Schoenberg serves on advisory boards for the MIT Sloan Health Initiative, Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice, and the American Heart Association Telehealth board. He holds more than 50 U.S.-issued patents related to digital care innovation.

Schoenberg transitioned from president and co-CEO to executive vice chairman of Amwell’s board of directors. He is a frequent speaker at the American Medical Informatics Association and other industry conferences, and has published scientific papers in leading medical journals. Schoenberg is known for his expertise in healthcare technology, medical informatics, and digital health policy.
