Roland Betancourt

Roland Betancourt is a Chancellor's Professor of Art History at the University of California, Irvine, and serves as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Betancourt specializes in Byzantine history and its connections to contemporary popular culture, with research spanning the history of science and technology, intellectual history, and art history. His work explores topics such as theories of sensation and perception, as well as the premodern histories of queerness and racialization.

Betancourt teaches courses that analyze modern popular culture through the lens of art history, including "Disneyland: Art, Architecture and Operation," which examines the Magic Kingdom as a cultural and architectural phenomenon. His scholarship investigates how Disney theme parks utilize technologies similar to those found in factory assembly lines, offering insight into the relationship between industrial systems and entertainment spaces. As director of the PhD Program in Visual Studies at UC Irvine, Betancourt mentors emerging art historians and visual scholars.

Betancourt has been named a Guggenheim Fellow for his contributions to art history and cultural studies. His work addresses the intersection of high art and popular culture, making historical and technological concepts accessible to a broad audience. Through teaching, research, and public scholarship, Betancourt engages with subjects ranging from medieval Byzantine art to the design and operation of contemporary entertainment environments, providing expertise on the interplay of history, technology, and culture.
