Roger Craig is recognized as one of the most versatile running backs in National Football League history. The San Francisco 49ers selected Craig out of the University of Nebraska in the second round of the NFL Draft. He became a regular in Bill Walsh's West Coast offense as a rookie, contributing 725 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, along with 48 receptions for 427 yards and four touchdowns. Entering the league during a period when running backs were not typically featured in the passing game, Craig distinguished himself as a leading receiving back.
Craig's career featured several historic milestones. He became the first player in NFL history to surpass 1,000 yards in both rushing and receiving in a single season. In his most productive season, Craig accumulated 2,066 scrimmage yards, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark both on the ground and as a receiver—a feat later matched by Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey. He also caught 92 passes and scored 15 touchdowns that season. Craig was the first player to score three touchdowns in a Super Bowl, the first to earn Pro Bowl selections as both a running back and a fullback, and the first running back to lead all players in receptions for a season.
Over an 11-season career, Craig earned four Pro Bowl selections and was named AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion. Craig set a 49ers team record with 1,502 rushing yards as San Francisco turned a 10-6 regular-season record into a playoff run that concluded with a Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. His 410 yards from scrimmage in Super Bowl wins rank third all-time behind Jerry Rice and Franco Harris. Craig played for the 49ers, Los Angeles Raiders, and Minnesota Vikings.
Craig was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of a class that included quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, linebacker Luke Kuechly, and kicker Adam Vinatieri. During his induction, Craig revealed he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia, a condition associated with cognitive decline and memory loss, which he attributed in part to concussions sustained during his NFL career. His openness has contributed to increased awareness of the long-term health risks faced by NFL players.
Following his playing career, Craig has remained active in the sports community, participating in NFL events, engaging in motivational speaking, and advocating for athlete wellness and personal development. He has addressed the challenges of transitioning from professional football to life after sports, emphasizing perseverance, adaptability, and self-improvement. Craig's experiences continue to inform his work in athlete advocacy and public speaking, making him a prominent voice on issues of player health, wellness, and career transition in professional football.
