
Roderick Townsend-Roberts is a three-time Paralympic gold medalist and five-time World Champion in Paralympic athletics, recognized for his achievements in the T47 high jump. Born with permanent nerve damage to his right arm and shoulder, Townsend-Roberts began his athletic career in able-bodied sports, competing as a decathlete and serving as captain of his high school American football team. His introduction to Para athletics by Paralympian Jeff Skiba marked the start of his career in adaptive track and field.
Townsend-Roberts made his international debut at the Arizona Grand Prix before competing at the Parapan American Games in Toronto, where he set a world record in the high jump and won two gold medals. He went on to win the high jump T47 gold at the World Championships in Doha. At the Rio Paralympic Games, Townsend-Roberts won gold in both the long jump and high jump, setting Paralympic records in both events and becoming the only competitor to clear the two-metre mark in the high jump. He continued his success at the Tokyo Games, setting a new high jump world record and earning a gold medal, along with a silver in the long jump.
Townsend-Roberts has secured every high jump title at the Paralympic Games and World Championships since his debut, including five consecutive world championship gold medals. At the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, he broke his own world record and defended his Paralympic title, securing his third consecutive Paralympic gold and fifth career Paralympic medal. As Team USA's athletics captain in Paris, he was recognized for his leadership and presence at the Stade de France.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Townsend-Roberts has established a career as a coach and mentor. A graduate of Boise State University, he has coached at Northern Arizona University and the University of Louisville, contributing to the development of All-Americans in jumping events. He is a coach at Grand Canyon University, where he continues to work with emerging athletes in track and field. Townsend-Roberts has been recognized as an ESPY finalist and is a keynote speaker, sharing his experiences in overcoming adversity and competing at the highest level in Paralympic sports.
