Robert Kyncl

Robert Kyncl is an executive at the intersection of technology, media, and music, with more than two decades of experience shaping the digital entertainment landscape. Kyncl began his career in the mailroom of a Los Angeles talent agency before moving through roles at HBO and early internet startups. A significant chapter in his career unfolded at Netflix, where he played a key role in the company’s transition from DVD rentals to on-demand streaming. He negotiated major content deals and led content acquisition efforts, including a deal with pay-TV company Epix that secured rights to movies from Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM, bringing approximately 1,000 new titles to Netflix and strengthening its position in the on-demand content market.

Kyncl later joined YouTube as chief business officer, overseeing creative and commercial partnerships, expanding the platform’s creator, artist, and media company ecosystem, and leading the development of paid subscription services such as YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, and YouTube TV. During his tenure, YouTube paid more than $30 billion to creators, artists, and media companies over a three-year period, reflecting the commercial infrastructure established for the creator economy. Kyncl also contributed to YouTube’s efforts to address copyright issues by supporting the development of fingerprinting software, which enabled the platform to track copyrights and build commercial relationships with rights holders. He co-authored "Streampunks: YouTube and the Rebels Remaking Media," providing an insider perspective on YouTube’s evolution in digital media.

Kyncl’s industry recognition includes appearances in Variety’s Dealmakers Impact Report, Vanity Fair’s New Establishment List, Billboard’s Power 100 List, Billboard’s International Power Players List, Billboard’s Digital Power Players List, and Adweek’s Top 50 Execs Who Make the Wheels Turn. He has been named a Variety 500 honoree multiple times. Kyncl has represented YouTube at global events such as International CES, MIPCOM in Cannes, the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, and VidCon.

Kyncl serves as CEO of Warner Music Group, one of the three major global music companies, which includes Atlantic Records, Warner Records, Parlophone, and Warner Chappell Music. He leads the company through the opportunities and challenges of the digital and artificial intelligence era, overseeing organizational transformation and artistic achievements. Kyncl has emphasized Warner Music Group’s momentum, citing increased market share and revenue growth driven by the value of music and new revenue opportunities in AI.

In addition to his corporate roles, Kyncl is co-founder of the Kyncl Family Foundation, which supports underserved communities through scholarships in STEM fields. His background as an immigrant from Czechoslovakia informs his perspective on resilience, reinvention, and the impact of open media. Kyncl received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business and Management and is a frequent speaker on topics related to music, technology, and the creator economy.
