Robert J. Marzano

Dr. Robert J. Marzano is a leading figure in American education, recognized for his work in bridging academic research and classroom practice. Marzano has translated decades of research into practical, evidence-based strategies for improving instruction, assessment, and leadership in K-12 education. He has spent more than 50 years in the field, working with educators as a speaker and trainer. Marzano holds a bachelor's degree in English from Iona College in New York, a master's degree in education with a focus on reading and language arts from Seattle University, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington.

Throughout his career, Marzano has held roles that have shaped his research and expanded his influence in education. He served as a senior scholar at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Aurora, Colorado, and as an associate professor in the School of Education at the University of Colorado Denver. Marzano has conducted applied research for the U.S. Department of Education, collecting data to analyze issues in standards-based assessment. The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences established the Regional Educational Laboratory (Central) at Marzano Research, where he was named executive director. He also founded Marzano Academies to promote competency-based education systems, serving as president of its board of directors and guiding curriculum design and teacher training initiatives.

Marzano is known as an author whose works are widely read by educators. He has written more than 50 books and 200 articles on topics including instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. Notable titles include "Classroom Instruction That Works," "What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action," "The Art and Science of Teaching," and "The New Art and Science of Teaching." Additional works include "Leaders of Learning," "Making Classroom Assessments Reliable and Valid," "Managing the Inner World of Teaching," "Handbook for High Reliability Schools," and "The Highly Engaged Classroom." Marzano has identified three areas central to school improvement reforms: fostering and sustaining system-wide teaching strategies, providing effective feedback to students, and building a strong student academic vocabulary.

School districts across the United States have adopted the Marzano hierarchical models of teacher, school leader, and district leader evaluation to improve instructional efficacy and student learning. Marzano is co-creator, with Learning Sciences Marzano Center, of the Marzano Hierarchical Evaluation System, which includes evaluation models for teacher, school leader, non-classroom instructor, and district leader evaluation.

Marzano's contributions have been recognized with the Brock International Prize in Education, awarded for his work in translating educational research and theory into practical programs and tools for K-12 teachers and administrators. His research was further honored with the Independent Book Publishers Association Gold Award in the Education category for "The Marzano Synthesis: A Collected Guide to What Works in K–12 Education," a book synthesizing 66 of his works to provide educators with a cohesive framework for professional learning.
