Robert Crandall Biography
Robert L. Crandall, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AMR Corporation and American Airlines, is widely credited with transforming the airline industry. During his 25-year tenure, he spearheaded innovations including the modernization of the SABRE computer reservations system, the creation of Super Saver fares, the launch of the AAdvantage frequent flyer program, and the development of the first airline yield management system. His leadership expanded American Airlines into one of the world’s leading carriers with revenues exceeding $20 billion.
Crandall currently serves on the boards of GoGo Inc. and Hipmunk. He has been honored by publications including BusinessWeek, Aviation Week & Space Technology, and Air Transport World, and received the Horatio Alger Award in 1997.
A native of Westerly, Rhode Island, Crandall earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Florida and Massachusetts with his wife, Jan, and they have three children and seven grandchildren.
