Richard H.K. Vietor

Richard H.K. Vietor is the Baker Foundation Professor and Paul Whiton Cherington Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School. Vietor's academic background bridges economics and history, with a Bachelor of Arts in economics, a Master of Arts in history, and a doctorate in history. This multidisciplinary foundation informs his approach to analyzing the relationship between business, government, and the global economy. Prior to joining Harvard, Vietor held faculty positions at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University of Missouri at Columbia.

At Harvard Business School, Vietor has taught courses on international political economy and business regulation. His research on business and government policy appears in numerous journals and books, and he has authored more than 180 case studies on topics such as energy policy, natural gas regulation, deregulation in airlines, railroads, telecommunications, financial services, and national development strategies. Vietor's work addresses macroeconomic policy, regulatory frameworks, and the intersection of business and government.

Vietor's books include "Energy Policy in America Since 1945," "Strategic Management in the Regulated Environment," "Contrived Competition: Regulation and Deregulation in America," "Business Management and the Natural Environment," and "Globalization and Growth: Case Studies in National Economic Strategies." In "How Countries Compete: Strategy, Structure, and Government in the Global Economy," Vietor examines how governments influence economic development and private enterprise, drawing on history, economic analysis, and interviews with executives and officials worldwide.

Vietor has consulted for the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and has served on advisory boards of business schools in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Uruguay, as well as advisory councils in Australia and the Netherlands. He has received a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship, the Harvard-Newcomen Postdoctoral Fellowship in Business History, and the Newcomen Award in Business History. Vietor is recognized for translating academic research in business history, government policy, and global economic strategy into practical insights for executives and policymakers.
