Richard Baldwin

Richard E. Baldwin is a professor of international economics at IMD Business School in Lausanne and founder and editor-in-chief of VoxEU.org. Baldwin completed his PhD in economics at MIT under the supervision of Paul Krugman and has coauthored several articles with Krugman. His research focuses on international trade, globalization, and the economic impacts of digital technology, with publications in American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics. Baldwin's work is widely cited in the field of international economics.

Baldwin's career includes roles in academia, policy, and public engagement. He served as a senior staff economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisers, where he worked on trade issues such as the Uruguay Round, North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations, and US-Japan trade relations. Baldwin has consulted for governments and international organizations including the European Union, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Bank, European Free Trade Association, and United States Agency for International Development. He was a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Trade and served as president of the Centre for Economic Policy Research.

Baldwin is the author of several books on globalization and technology. "The Great Convergence: Information Technology and the New Globalization" explores the role of information technology in reshaping global trade. "The Globotics Upheaval: Globalization, Robotics, and the Future of Work" analyzes the effects of digital technology and artificial intelligence on the service sector and labor markets. In "World War Trade," Baldwin examines the use of trade policy as a tool of geopolitical competition.

Before joining IMD, Baldwin founded VoxEU.org to promote research-based policy analysis and commentary by economists and continues to serve as its editor-in-chief. He is a frequent keynote speaker at business conferences and has been recognized by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as one of the 100 most influential German economists. Baldwin has been named a Schumpeter-Haberler Distinguished Fellow by the International Economic Association and has received honorary doctorates from Turku School of Economics, University of St. Gallen, and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Baldwin is known for bridging academic research and public discourse on international trade, globalization, and economic policy.
