Riccardo Sabatini is a scientist and entrepreneur whose work spans physics, data science, and biology. Specializing in numerical modeling of complex systems, Sabatini's expertise includes material science, financial markets, computational genomics, and drug design. He earned a Bachelor of Science in quantum physics at Catholic University of Sacro Cuore, completed a research fellowship at Max-Planck-Institut in nanofabrication, graduated with a master's degree in theoretical physics at University of Trieste, and received a doctorate in quantum theory of matter at SISSA, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at EPFL in numerical simulation of quantum materials.
Sabatini has contributed to scientific research and innovation across multiple disciplines. He served as director of FoodCAST, a European Union research project focused on food and commodity markets forecasting, and was a founding member of AiiDA and Quantum ESPRESSO, an open-source suite for quantum modeling of materials. Sabatini later applied computational genomics and artificial intelligence as lead research scientist for Human Longevity, a company working at the intersection of genomics and AI. During this period, Sabatini and his lab developed an algorithm to predict traits such as height, eye color, skin color, and facial structure based on genomic data from a blood sample.
Sabatini delivered a TED talk titled "How to Read the Genome and Build a Human Being," demonstrating the volume of information contained in a human genome and highlighting the ethical considerations surrounding genomic technology. He encourages global dialogue on the responsible use of these advancements.
In addition to his research, Sabatini has contributed to global policy and entrepreneurship in artificial intelligence. He served as chairman of the I7 Team at the G7 for artificial intelligence and is an expert member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, an OECD initiative guiding responsible AI development. Sabatini is an author in scientific journals, a consultant for Fortune 500 companies, and an inventor of patents in biotechnology and information technology. He is also co-founder of the Refugees Action HUB center at MIT, an educational initiative for displaced populations.
Sabatini works on programmable biology at Orionis Biosciences, focusing on data science and ethical considerations in biotechnology and artificial intelligence. He addresses policymakers, entrepreneurs, and global audiences on the intersection of science, technology, and society.
