Peter Salovey

Peter Salovey is an American social psychologist recognized for his research in emotional intelligence and health psychology. Salovey, along with colleague John Mayer, formally defined and established the concept of emotional intelligence, expanding the understanding of how individuals perceive, control, and reason about emotions. Their work challenged earlier theories that positioned emotion and reasoning as rivals, instead demonstrating that emotions, when properly directed, can motivate productive outcomes. This research laid the foundation for subsequent work in the field, including that of Daniel Goleman.

Salovey has contributed to the development of models and assessments for emotional intelligence, such as the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test. His research in health psychology applies social psychology principles to health messaging, focusing on areas such as HIV risk reduction, early cancer detection, and smoking cessation. Salovey founded and directed the Health, Emotion, and Behavior Laboratory, which evolved into the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The center conducts research on the psychological significance of moods and emotions, the theory and measurement of emotional intelligence, and the effectiveness of evidence-based programs for teaching emotional intelligence.

Salovey has authored or edited thirteen books translated into eleven languages and published more than 350 journal articles and essays. His edited volumes include "Emotional Development and Emotional Intelligence: Implications for Educators" and "The Emotionally Intelligent Manager," which have extended his research into educational and organizational settings.

During his tenure at Yale, Salovey held multiple senior leadership positions, including chair of the Psychology Department, dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, dean of Yale College, provost, and president. As president, he oversaw the development of new programs and facilities, restructuring and expanding the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, launching the Jackson School of Global Affairs, transitioning the Yale School of Public Health into an independent school, and opening two new residential colleges, which increased Yale College enrollment by 15 percent. As provost, Salovey facilitated strategic planning initiatives such as promoting faculty diversity, creating the Office of Academic Integrity, establishing the University-wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct, and managing the university's budget during the global financial crisis.

Salovey's research and teaching have been recognized with honors including the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the National Cancer Institute CIS Partner in Research Award, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Excellence Award, and the American Psychological Association's Outstanding Contributions to Health Psychology by a Senior Professional Award. He has received teaching awards at Yale, including the William Clyde DeVane Medal and the Lex Hixon '63 Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences. Salovey is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine, and holds honorary degrees from institutions such as University of Pretoria, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harvard University, McGill University, and University of Haifa. He holds the title of Sterling Professor of Psychology at Yale and continues to contribute to the fields of emotional intelligence and health psychology through his scholarship and public engagement.
