
Oskar Eustis is a prominent figure in American theater and has served as the artistic director of The Public Theater in New York City. Over a career spanning decades, Eustis has worked as a director, dramaturg, and artistic director for theaters across the United States. He graduated from high school at age 15, moved to New York City, briefly attended New York University, and co-founded Red Wing Theater Company. Eustis then served as resident director and dramaturg at Eureka Theatre Company in San Francisco, later becoming artistic director. He subsequently joined Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles as associate artistic director.
While at Eureka Theatre, Eustis commissioned Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" and directed its world premiere at Mark Taper Forum, a significant moment in contemporary American theater. At Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island, he directed the world premieres of Paula Vogel's "Long Christmas Ride Home" and Tony Kushner's "Homebody/Kabul," earning the Eliot Norton Award for Outstanding Production in New England. Eustis has directed world premieres of plays by Philip Kan Gotanda, David Henry Hwang, Emily Mann, Suzan-Lori Parks, Ellen McLaughlin, and Eduardo Machado, among others.
At The Public Theater, Eustis has overseen the development and production of musicals and plays that have achieved critical and commercial success, including "Hair," "Fun Home," and "Hamilton," all of which won Tony Awards on Broadway. "Hamilton" and "Sweat" received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Other notable productions developed under his leadership include "Passing Strange," "Here Lies Love," "Suffs," "The Brother/Sister Plays," "Eclipsed," "Manahatta," "Soft Power," and "Tiny Beautiful Things." The Public produced 20 plays and musicals that transferred to Broadway, beginning with Lisa Kron's "Well" through Alicia Keys' "Hell's Kitchen."
Eustis has established several programs at The Public, such as Public Works, Public Forum, the Emerging Writers Group, and the Mobile Unit, supporting new play development and community engagement. He has collaborated with playwrights and creators including Tony Kushner, Suzan-Lori Parks, David Henry Hwang, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Richard Nelson, Rinne Groff, Tarell Alvin McCraney, and Lisa Kron. Eustis is also a professor of dramatic writing and arts and public policy at New York University and has held academic positions at UCLA, Middlebury College, and Brown University, where he founded and chaired the Trinity Rep/Brown University Consortium for professional theater training.
Eustis's contributions to American theater have been recognized with honors such as election to the Theater Hall of Fame and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He holds honorary doctorates from Brown, Middlebury, and Rhode Island College. Lin-Manuel Miranda has credited Eustis with nurturing creators and making theater accessible to broader audiences.
