Baroness Nicky Morgan of Cotes is a British politician, lawyer, and public servant whose career includes senior roles in government, finance, and public policy. After graduating from St Hugh's College, Oxford, Morgan worked as a solicitor and corporate lawyer for 16 years in the City of London, focusing on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. She trained at Theodore Goddard, spent nearly five years at Allen & Overy, and later worked as a professional support lawyer at Travers Smith. Morgan was elected to represent Loughborough in Parliament, beginning a parliamentary career that included several influential positions in British government.
Morgan served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Financial Secretary to the Treasury, followed by appointments as Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities. As Education Secretary, Morgan emphasized the importance of character development alongside academic achievement, supporting funding for schools to teach skills such as grit and resilience, and introducing programs involving former military personnel. She also advocated for all schools to become academies, promoting independent operation from local councils as part of education reform in England.
Morgan was elected chair of the Treasury Select Committee, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She later served as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, overseeing internet regulation, the arts, and media policy. After being elevated to the House of Lords as a life peer, Morgan continued her work in both the private and public sectors, including roles as a non-executive director at Santander UK, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, the Association of British Insurers, the Careers & Enterprise Company, and as a trustee of the Science Museum Group. She chaired the UK Commission on Covid Commemoration and serves as Chair of the Advertising Standards Authority.
Morgan is the author of "Taught Not Caught." She regularly appears on Talk TV, Times Radio, and BBC programs such as "Woman's Hour" and "PM." Morgan speaks on topics including women in business, diversity and inclusion, boardroom culture and leadership, government operations, internet regulation, artificial intelligence, and technology policy. Her background in law, Cabinet-level government experience, and ongoing involvement with both private and public sector organizations inform her perspectives on governance, education, and business.
