Nicholas Eberstadt is a leading authority on demography, political economy, and global population trends. He holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute, where he conducts research and writes on demographics, economic development, international security in the Korean Peninsula and Asia, as well as domestic issues including poverty and social well-being. Eberstadt earned his AB, MPA, and PhD in political economy and government from Harvard University and holds a master of science from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Eberstadt's work addresses global poverty, entitlement policy, workforce participation, and the geopolitical consequences of demographic change. His books and monographs include "Poverty in China," "The Tyranny of Numbers," "The End of North Korea," "Russia's Peacetime Demographic Crisis," "A Nation of Takers: America's Entitlement Epidemic," and "Men Without Work: America's Invisible Crisis," which examines the withdrawal of millions of prime-age American men from the labor force. In "America's Human Arithmetic," Eberstadt analyzes the coexistence of national wealth with social dysfunction, declining life expectancy, and eroding civic confidence in the United States.
Eberstadt has consulted for the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. State Department, USAID, and the World Bank, and has provided expert testimony before Congress. His media appearances include NPR and CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," and he has contributed to publications such as Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Atlantic Monthly, and Commentary. Eberstadt frequently discusses topics such as global depopulation, China's demographic crisis, and the future of American power on podcasts and public forums.
Eberstadt has served on the President's Council on Bioethics, the Presidential HELP Commission, and is a founding board member of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. He has also served as a senior adviser to the National Bureau of Asian Research and as a member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum. Eberstadt has received the Bradley Prize and the Irving Kristol Award for his contributions to public policy scholarship.
