Newton Campbell Jr.

Dr. Newton Campbell Jr. is a computer scientist and applied mathematician whose work focuses on artificial intelligence, space systems, and international technology policy. Campbell brings nearly two decades of experience in the space community and defense sectors. He holds a doctorate in computer science from Nova Southeastern University.

Campbell began his career supporting U.S. Department of Defense research programs, primarily with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, where he served as principal investigator and technical lead for multiple research initiatives. His work included developing technologies in internet privacy, Internet of Things, and cyber-physical systems. Campbell later served as an artificial intelligence subject matter expert between Goddard Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center, leading projects in urban air mobility, geomagnetism, space radiation, virtual reality, and high-performance computing. He operates a consulting firm that provides artificial intelligence and data science consulting to NASA, the United Nations, and nongovernmental organizations, with a focus on AI ethics, autonomous systems, and climate resilience.

As the inaugural Space Director for the Australian Remote Operations for Space and Earth Consortium, Campbell oversaw the development of lunar rover, remote operations, and climate mitigation technologies to support the growth of Australia's space industry. Among the programs he managed was the design of Australia's first lunar mission, "Trailblazer." Campbell serves as an artificial intelligence subject matter expert for the United Nations International Telecommunication Union "Early Warning for All" program and as a senior AI researcher with the NASA Office of the Chief Information Officer.

Campbell became the youngest member of the Board of Directors for The Planetary Society and co-founded the nonprofit Heritage Space Food, which received NASA's Space Tech Catalyst Prize for its work integrating culture and exploration through gastrodiplomacy. He has been recognized as a Young Leader by both the French-American Foundation and the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue. Campbell is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council GeoTech Center.

Campbell holds advisory and fellowship roles with several STEM and legal policy groups, including The Planetary Society, the Philosophical Society of Washington, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, University of Colorado Boulder Law School, and American University Washington College of Law, where he provides expertise on space, climate change, and ethical artificial intelligence. He has served as a jurist for the Raw Science Film Festival and is president of Jury for Science. Campbell regularly advises government officials and speaks at international conferences on topics related to artificial intelligence, space technology, and technology policy.
