Nelly Furtado is a Canadian singer-songwriter known for her genre-blending sound, global appeal, and ability to reinvent herself across different eras of pop music. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, to Portuguese immigrant parents, Furtado grew up immersed in a wide range of musical influences, from traditional folk to contemporary pop. She began writing songs as a teenager and gained early industry attention for her distinctive voice and eclectic style.

Furtado broke through internationally with her debut album, Whoa, Nelly! in 2000, which featured the hit singles “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn Off the Light.” The album earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and established her as a fresh, unconventional presence in pop music. Her follow-up album, Folklore, leaned further into her multicultural roots and artistic experimentation, though it achieved more modest commercial success.
