Neal Katyal

Neal Katyal served as the Acting Solicitor General of the United States from May 2010 until June 2011, following in the footsteps of Elena Kagan under the Obama administration. Katyal has a rich history of arguing numerous cases before the Supreme Court, including the defense of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Affordable Care Act. His legal acumen also extended to the contentious issue of Guantanamo Bay, as he represented detainees in the Supreme Court case "Hamdan v. Rumsfeld."

Currently a partner at Milbank LLP, Katyal has also held a partnership at global law firm Hogan Lovells, specializing in constitutional law, national security, criminal defense, and intellectual property law. His engagement with the broader public saw him make a cameo in the third season of "House of Cards" in 2015. In 2017, The American Lawyer magazine recognized his legal prowess by crowning him the Grand Prize Litigator of the Year. His first book, "Impeach: The Case Against Donald Trump," was published in 2019, contributing to the discourse on political accountability.

Over the years, Katyal has represented several high-profile clients, such as Nestlé and Cargill at the Supreme Court in a class-action lawsuit involving child slave labor, and Citigroup in a case involving a mistaken transfer of $900 million. His legal advocacy extends into the future as he is slated to lead the appellate practice of Milbank's Washington D.C. office in 2025. In 2026, he won a major Supreme Court case that blocked President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff action. His contributions to the legal field have been widely recognized, with the US Justice Department awarding him the Edmund Randolph Award, the highest honor the department can bestow on a civilian.
