N.T. Wright

Nicholas Thomas Wright, commonly known as N.T. Wright, is one of the most influential New Testament scholars and theologians of the contemporary era.

His early academic appointments included positions at McGill University in Montreal, Worcester College at Oxford, and later, leadership roles at the University of St Andrews and the University of Oxford. Most notably, he served as the Bishop of Durham from 2003 to 2010, a role that placed him among the most senior bishops in the Church of England. As a theologian, Wright is best known for his efforts to place the New Testament writings in their first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman context. He challenges traditional readings of Scripture, particularly those shaped by the Reformation and Enlightenment, urging readers to rediscover the deeply historical and narrative-driven message of early Christianity.
