Michele Sison

Michele Sison is a diplomat and director of the Global Office in Washington, D.C., for the International Organization for Migration. With more than four decades of experience in international affairs, Sison has held roles across Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Haiti, and Washington, D.C., contributing to U.S. foreign policy and humanitarian initiatives. Her leadership at IOM Washington focuses on strengthening partnerships and engagement with U.S.-based institutions, with an emphasis on migration issues, countering human trafficking, and supporting civil society initiatives.

Sison's diplomatic career includes serving as U.S. assistant secretary of state for International Organization Affairs, U.S. ambassador to Haiti, deputy representative to the United Nations, and ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. She has also held senior assignments such as assistant chief of mission in Baghdad and principal deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asian Affairs. Sison has been recognized for her expertise in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and multilateral cooperation, and holds the rank of career ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service.

A recipient of the U.S. Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the U.S. Presidential Meritorious Service Award, and the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, Sison is known for her ability to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes and foster dialogue among diverse stakeholders. Her public speaking and engagement at international forums highlight her expertise in diplomacy, humanitarian affairs, global migration, and international relations.
