Michael A. Elliott

Michael A. Elliott is the 20th president of Amherst College, known for his leadership in higher education and scholarship in American literature and culture. Before returning to his alma mater as president, Elliott served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University, where he led initiatives to diversify faculty and student bodies, expanded undergraduate research opportunities, and directed the largest fundraising campaign in the college’s history. His academic work includes publications on the history of fiction in the United States, Native American literature, and public history, and he has contributed as an editor to major literary anthologies.

At Amherst, Elliott has developed a strategic vision focused on strengthening student culture and belonging, enhancing the college as a workplace, and deepening its commitment to the greater good. He has introduced programs such as "Serving the Greater Good," which expands curricular offerings on democratic society and community engagement, as well as post-graduate fellowships and social impact grants to support students pursuing careers in public service.
