Mesmin Destin

Mesmin Destin is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, where he also serves as a fellow of the Institute for Policy Research. Destin holds a joint appointment between the School of Education and Social Policy, in the Human Development and Social Policy program, and the Department of Psychology, in the Social area. He is the inaugural faculty director of Student Access & Enrichment at Northwestern.

Destin's research focuses on how socioeconomic circumstances influence individual thoughts, identities, and behaviors. His work investigates social and psychological factors that contribute to disparities in educational outcomes from middle school through early adulthood. Destin employs secondary data analysis, laboratory experiments, and field experiments to identify strategies and supports that guide young people's perceptions of self, society, and opportunity as they navigate inequality and pursue goals. At the university level, Destin examines how social experiences and institutional structures shape the motivation, well-being, and educational trajectories of lower socioeconomic status and first-generation college students. His research has produced findings on how reframing perceived disadvantages as strengths can positively affect well-being and academic achievement.

Throughout his career, Destin has explored students' access to resources and opportunities, specifically investigating how environments and experiences influence identity development. His research has been supported by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the William T. Grant Foundation. Destin contributed to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, "The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity for All Youth." His scholarly publications appear in leading journals across social psychology and public policy, including work on status-based identity, the psychological costs of financial burden on college performance, and the role of near-peer mentorship in student persistence.

Destin has received honors including the Society for Experimental Social Psychology Diversity Science Award, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship Award, the International Society for Self and Identity Outstanding Early Career Award, the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution, and Northwestern's Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence Award.

As a social psychologist and professor, Destin designs experiments that illuminate experiences influencing self-perception and opportunity. He has presented his work to public audiences through TED, including a TEDx Chicago talk and a TED Talk titled "How Everyday Interactions Shape Your Future," where he discusses how everyday interactions and experiences can shape life trajectories. Destin's research and public engagement contribute to ongoing conversations in education, social psychology, and identity development.
