Masai Ujiri is recognized as a pioneering executive in professional basketball management and international sports leadership. After a professional playing career in Europe, Ujiri began his NBA executive journey as a scout for Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets. He later returned to the Nuggets as general manager and executive vice president of basketball operations, becoming the first African general manager in major American sports. Ujiri assembled a Nuggets roster that achieved a franchise-record 57 wins, earning him NBA Executive of the Year honors as the only non-American to receive the award.
Ujiri's tenure with the Toronto Raptors marked a significant period in NBA history. Joining as executive vice president and general manager before being promoted to president, he led the Raptors to the playoffs in each of his first seven seasons, transforming the team from a perennial non-contender. Ujiri became known for bold roster moves, including the trade of DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard, which contributed to the Raptors securing their first NBA Championship and the first for a team outside the United States. He was instrumental in drafting and developing players such as Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby, further establishing his reputation for talent identification and player development.
Ujiri expanded his executive leadership by joining the Dallas Mavericks as team president and alternate governor, overseeing basketball operations, roster construction, player personnel, and scouting. He also became part of the ownership group for the Toronto Tempo, the city's WNBA franchise, and launched Tempo Rising, a global coaching mentorship program supporting women-identifying and non-binary coaches in basketball.
Beyond his executive roles, Ujiri is known for his humanitarian work. He co-founded Giants of Africa, an organization dedicated to empowering African youth through basketball, which has conducted camps and clinics for tens of thousands of young people across 20 countries and built nearly 40 basketball courts throughout the continent. Ujiri and Basketball Without Borders are featured in the documentary film "Giants of Africa." He also co-founded Zaria Group, which focuses on developing sports, entertainment, and cultural infrastructure in Africa. Ujiri was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, reflecting his influence in sports management, youth development, and global basketball outreach.
