Mary Ehrenworth

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth is an accomplished literacy expert, educator, author, and national consultant serving as Senior Deputy Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) at Columbia University. In this leadership role, she works with schools, districts, and educators across the U.S. and internationally to strengthen reading, writing, and critical literacy instruction.

With a doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Ehrenworth has dedicated her career to advancing literacy practices that encourage deep interpretation, critical thinking, and equity-oriented teaching. Her interests include deep reading and writing for social justice, critical literacies, and curriculum innovation—areas that inform both her writing and her professional development work.

She is a frequent keynote speaker at Project events as well as national and international education conferences, and she collaborates closely with school leaders, teachers, and literacy specialists to build instructional capacity grounded in research and practice.

Dr. Ehrenworth is also an accomplished author and co-editor, contributing to numerous books, articles, and curriculum resources that support teaching reading and writing. Her publications include titles such as The Power of Grammar, Pathways to the Common Core, and The Civically Engaged Classroom, among others in the Units of Study for Teaching Reading and Writing series.

Her work continues to influence literacy instruction through a combination of leadership, research-based curriculum development, professional learning, and advocacy for culturally responsive and critically engaged teaching.
