Martin Seligman

Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman is recognized as a leading psychologist in the field of positive psychology, which focuses on the scientific study of human flourishing, well-being, and happiness. Seligman serves as director of the Penn Positive Psychology Center and Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology in the Penn Department of Psychology. He also directs the Penn Master of Applied Positive Psychology program. A Review of General Psychology survey ranked Seligman among the most cited psychologists of the 20th century.

Seligman's research began with studies on depression and the concept of learned helplessness, a psychological condition in which individuals or animals act helplessly in situations where they have the power to change their circumstances. This theory, developed at the University of Pennsylvania, contributed to understanding clinical depression as partially resulting from a perceived lack of control. Seligman later shifted his focus to exploring what makes life meaningful, leading to his election as president of the American Psychological Association, where he promoted positive psychology as a scientific discipline and encouraged research on human well-being.

Seligman has authored more than 350 scholarly publications and 30 books, including "Tomorrowmind," "The Hope Circuit," "Flourish," "Authentic Happiness," "Learned Optimism," "What You Can Change & What You Can't," "The Optimistic Child," and "Helplessness." His PERMA model, introduced in "Flourish," identifies five elements of well-being: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. This framework has been adopted in education, healthcare, business, and public policy.

Seligman's work in positive psychology has influenced programs in schools, workplaces, and communities globally. The Master of Applied Positive Psychology program at the University of Pennsylvania was established under his leadership as the first educational initiative of the Positive Psychology Center. His research and ideas have been featured in New York Times, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and other major magazines, as well as on television and radio.

Seligman has received several honors, including the APA Award for Lifetime Contributions to Psychology, the Tang Award for Lifetime Achievement in Psychology, the APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society for Research in Psychopathology, and the Distinguished Contribution Award for Basic Research with Applied Relevance from the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology. Through research, writing, and public speaking, Seligman has contributed to the understanding and application of positive psychology in psychology, education, and public policy.
