Marketa Wills

Dr. Marketa M. Wills, M.D., M.B.A., FAPA, serves as CEO and medical director of the American Psychiatric Association, becoming the first Black American and first woman to lead the organization. Wills brings extensive experience in clinical leadership, health plan administration, and organizational strategy within the mental health and psychiatry industry. Prior to her role at the American Psychiatric Association, she was senior vice president and chief medical officer at Johns Hopkins Health Plans, where she focused on optimizing clinical outcomes, managing costs, and implementing digital health solutions for diverse populations.

Wills has held leadership positions at McKinsey & Company, Memorial Hermann Hospital System, and WellCare Health Plans, with a focus on quality improvement and advancing mental health equity. Her academic background includes a medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, a residency in adult psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital program, where she served as chief resident, and an MBA from the Wharton School. Wills is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has contributed to national boards and committees, including the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Health Care Systems and Finance.

Wills is a frequent speaker and advocate, engaging audiences on topics such as the future of psychiatry, artificial intelligence in mental health, physician well-being, and health equity. She has participated in interviews and public forums, emphasizing transparency, inclusivity, and innovation in leadership. Wills is also a certified yoga teacher and incorporates mindfulness into her practice, reflecting a holistic approach to mental health and leadership.
