Mark Melton

Dr. Mark A. Melton is a distinguished academic leader and scientist with over two decades of experience in higher education, research, and institutional advancement. He currently serves as the Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dr. Melton's tenure at SAU includes roles as Professor of Biology and Dean of the School of Sciences, Mathematics, and Allied Health. He has also held positions such as Chair of the Department of Biological and Physical Sciences, Honors Program Director, and Program Director for the NIH-MARC U*STAR Program, a federally funded student research training initiative.

His research expertise encompasses developmental neurobiology, molecular genetics, and neurodegenerative diseases. He has secured and managed over $10 million in grants from agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Melton has also contributed to grant review panels for NIH and NSF and has conducted workshops on competitive grant writing and external evaluation.

Dr. Melton holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.S. in Developmental Biology from North Carolina A&T State University, and a Ph.D. in Developmental Neurophysiology from the University of Maryland at College Park. He completed postdoctoral research in molecular genetics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
