
Mark S. Hoplamazian is an accomplished business leader who has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyatt Hotels Corporation since December 2006. Born on November 27, 1963, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Hoplamazian is of Armenian-American heritage and has built a distinguished career at the intersection of finance, strategy, and hospitality.
Hoplamazian’s academic journey began at the Episcopal Academy, after which he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard College in 1985. He later obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1989. His early professional years included roles as a financial analyst at First Boston Corporation and a summer associate position at Boston Consulting Group, where he developed a strong foundation in financial analysis and strategic planning.
In 1989, Hoplamazian joined The Pritzker Organization, the family office for the Pritzker family, where he would spend the next 17 years in various leadership positions, ultimately serving as executive vice president. During his tenure, he advised on and managed a diverse portfolio of business interests, including Hyatt Hotels and its predecessor companies.
Hoplamazian was appointed to Hyatt’s board in November 2006 and assumed the role of CEO shortly thereafter. Under his leadership, Hyatt has undergone significant transformation, marked by its initial public offering, the expansion of its brand portfolio worldwide, and the implementation of purpose-driven initiatives. Programs such as World of Care, Change Starts Here, and RiseHY reflect his commitment to environmental sustainability, social equity, and workforce development. His approach to leadership blends strategic growth with a deep sense of corporate responsibility.
Beyond Hyatt, Hoplamazian is active in numerous business and civic organizations. He serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Aspen Institute and is a member of its Henry Crown Fellowship Discovery Class. He is also a board member of VF Corporation, serves on the Executive Committee of the American Hotel & Lodging Association and the World Travel & Tourism Council, and sits on the board of Brand USA. His civic involvement extends to organizations such as World Business Chicago, the Latin School of Chicago, Facing History and Ourselves, and Skills for Chicagoland’s Future.
On a personal level, Hoplamazian is married to Rachel DeYoung Kohler, daughter of the late businessman Herbert Kohler Jr., and together they have three children: Mara, Lena, and Leo. The family resides in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago.
