Dr. Margo Maine, PhD, FAED, CEDS, is a clinical psychologist specializing in eating disorders, body image, and women's health. Over a career spanning several decades, Maine has contributed to the understanding and treatment of eating disorders through clinical practice, research, writing, and advocacy. She served as a clinical consultant at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut, and as director of its Eating Disorders Program, experiences that informed her work in the field.
Maine is a founder and former adviser of the National Eating Disorders Association and a founder and fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders. She is the author of several books, including "Pursuing Perfection: Eating Disorders, Body Myths, and Women at Midlife and Beyond," "Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Research-Practice Gap," "Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders," "The Body Myth," "Father Hunger," and "Body Wars." Maine has also served as senior editor emeritus of Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention. Her book, "Hair Tells a Story: Hers, Yours, & Ours," explores women's relationship with their hair as a critical feminist issue and an often overlooked aspect of body image.
In addition to her clinical work, Maine has engaged in advocacy to influence federal policy related to eating disorders. She is a frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences, addressing topics related to the treatment and prevention of eating disorders and women's health. Maine's work challenges cultural narratives that contribute to disordered eating, particularly the misconception that eating disorders primarily affect young, white, affluent women.
Maine's contributions have been recognized with awards such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals, the Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, the Don and Melissa Nielsen Lifetime Achievement Award, the NEDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and recognition by the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. She maintains a private practice, Maine & Weinstein Specialty Group, in West Hartford, Connecticut, and lectures nationally and internationally on eating disorders, body image, and mental health.
