Malan Breton is a Taiwanese-born fashion designer, filmmaker, and multidisciplinary creative whose work spans couture, cinema, music, and performance. Breton began designing fashion at age 11, growing up as a performer in the entertainment industry, and is entirely self-taught as a designer. He moved to New York City with limited resources, beginning his career as a performer on Broadway stages and later transitioning into modeling, while apprenticing at Savile Row's Turnbull & Asser and working as a stylist for celebrities including Kylie Minogue and Linda Evangelista. An early milestone in his career included being named one of 12 new designers to watch on the New York runway in WWD Women's Wear Daily's Cheat Sheet.
Breton launched his namesake fashion label "Malan Breton," Malan Breton Homme, and Fantôme Malan Breton, establishing a presence in global fashion weeks with showings at New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week. His presentations emphasize theatrical storytelling, blending dramatic narratives with couture craftsmanship. Breton's designs have appeared in more than 200 cover features internationally, including Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, GQ, and L'Officiel. He was the first fashion design house to create for prime-time TV in a game show format in America, for NBC/Universal's "Minute to Win It." Breton has also created specialty stage costumes featured on the Tony Awards, the American Music Awards, "The Voice UK," the Olivier Awards, "RuPaul's Drag Race," and other major productions.
As a designer, Breton received the FGI Rising Star Award, the European Fashion Council Award for Most Promising New Designer, was nominated for the WGSN Global Fashion Award, and was named British Fashion Designer of the Year by S.A.L. He was also named UK Ambassador of the Arts for his work in fashion by UK Parliament and the Parliamentary Society, and Ambassador to Taiwan to the office of Tourism. Breton has lectured at FIT, Princeton University, Pratt, Parsons University, Shih Chien University, and other institutions worldwide.
Breton's creative work extends into filmmaking. His directorial debut, "Malan Breton – A Journey to Taiwan," a biographical documentary exploring his roots, won Best Documentary Short at the New York International Film Festival and received honors from the Taiwan Government for promoting cultural heritage through multimedia. His animated short "Immortal" secured the award for Best Animation at the London Fashion Film Festival, qualifying for BAFTA consideration and recognized for its blend of fashion illustration and narrative animation. Breton later directed his fourth fashion film, "Je Suis Mona," which has received awards and honors internationally. He has also been featured in the fashion film "Zoolander."
Breton's collections have been featured in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Museum at FIT, and MoMA, and have been worn by celebrities from film, TV, music, and royalty. Breton continues his involvement in New York Fashion Week and expands his work in philanthropy, including advocacy related to dementia and Alzheimer's disease. His career bridges high fashion, cinema, and public diplomacy, demonstrating a commitment to creative reinvention and multidisciplinary innovation.
