Lillian Faderman

Lillian Faderman is a historian specializing in LGBT history and culture in the United States. Recognized for her research and writings on lesbian culture, literature, and history, Faderman has contributed significantly to the academic study of same-sex relationships and gender studies. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles. Faderman served as a professor of English at California State University, Fresno, where she holds emeritus status, and as a visiting professor at UCLA.

Faderman's scholarship has influenced the understanding of lesbian history and LGBT studies. Her publication, "Surpassing the Love of Men: Romantic Friendship and Love Between Women from the 16th Century to the 20th Century," examined primary literary and historical sources to explore the normalization of emotional bonds between women prior to the late 19th century. In "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers: A History of Lesbian Life in Twentieth-Century America," Faderman documented the development of lesbian subcultures, including butch-femme dynamics and community formation, using archival evidence. The Guardian named "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers" one of the Top 10 Books of Radical History.

Her book, "The Gay Revolution: The Story of the Struggle," chronicles the fight for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender rights in the United States, and has been recognized by publications such as The Economist and Washington Post Book World. "Harvey Milk: His Lives and Death" was named the Most Valuable Biography by The Nation. In "Woman: The American History of an Idea," Faderman traces the evolution of womanhood in America, examining shifts from Puritan concepts to the sexual revolution and the impact of contemporary social movements.

In addition to her academic work, Faderman is a memoirist and creative nonfiction writer. Her memoir, "Naked in the Promised Land," received a Lambda Literary Award and the Judy Grahn Award for nonfiction from the Publishing Triangle. "My Mother's Wars" recounts her mother's experiences as a Jewish immigrant in New York during the 1930s. Faderman's writing is noted for its accessibility to both academic and general audiences.
