Lawrence Hill

Lawrence Hill is a Canadian novelist, essayist, and memoirist whose work explores themes of history, identity, and social justice. Hill has contributed significantly to Black culture in Canada, with his novel "The Book of Negroes" recognized internationally and establishing him among Canada's leading writers. Previously, Hill worked as a reporter for The Globe and Mail and as a parliamentary correspondent for The Winnipeg Free Press before earning a master's degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University and focusing on literature. His writing frequently addresses issues of identity and belonging.

Hill's third novel, "The Book of Negroes"—published in some countries as "Someone Knows My Name" and in French as "Aminata"—garnered widespread attention in Canada and abroad. The novel tells the story of Aminata Diallo, an African woman abducted as a child and forced into slavery. It received several awards, including the Rogers/Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, CBC Radio's Canada Reads, Radio Canada's Le Combat des livres, and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. The "Book of Negroes" television miniseries, co-written by Hill and director Clement Virgo, attracted millions of viewers on CBC in Canada and on BET in the United States, earning multiple honors, including eleven Canadian Screen Awards and the NAACP award for best writing of a television motion picture.

Hill's novel "The Illegal," defended by Olympic gold medalist Clara Hughes, won Canada Reads, making Hill the first writer to win the prize twice. "The Illegal" was longlisted for the International DUBLIN Literary Award and shortlisted for the NAACP Image Award for fiction. Hill's novel "Beatrice and Croc Harry," published by HarperCollins Canada, further demonstrates his versatility in Canadian literature. His body of work is recognized for its exploration of race, migration, and belonging.

Hill was selected as CBC Massey Lecturer, delivering lectures in five Canadian cities based on his nonfiction book "Blood: The Stuff of Life." The book examines the scientific and social history of blood and its impact on identity. Hill has spoken at academic and social conferences, literary festivals, libraries, universities, and high schools across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Europe, South America, South Africa, the Caribbean, and Australia.

Hill has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, received the Governor General's History Award, and was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. He has served as chair of the jury for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, won the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize for the Arts, and was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada. Hill is a professor of creative writing at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and is active in community engagement. He serves as honorary patron of Crossroads International, supporting programs for girls and women in Africa through the Aminata Fund.
