Laura Müller

Laura Müller is a German motorsport engineer recognized as the first female race engineer in Formula One. A graduate of Technical University of Munich, Müller serves as a race engineer for Haas F1 Team and has worked as Esteban Ocon's race engineer, marking a milestone as the first female full-time race engineer in Formula One history. Her career in motorsport engineering began after discovering her interest in engineering following her school years, including a period spent in Australia that reignited her passion for motorsport.

Müller earned a mechanical engineering degree and a master's in automotive engineering from Technical University of Munich. She began her professional journey as an intern at Phoenix Racing, focusing on data and driver analysis. Müller then worked as an engineer in Formula Renault 2.0 with Josef Kaufmann Racing, took on a data engineering role in Brazil, and contributed to data and performance engineering in the WEC Series. Her experience includes positions at DragonSpeed, ABT Sportsline in the DTM series—where she served as Sophia Floersch's race engineer—and Manthey Racing. This diverse background across LMP2, LMP3, DTM, and GT3 categories provided Müller with a comprehensive foundation in motorsport engineering before entering Formula One.

Müller joined Haas F1 Team, initially working in the simulator department before advancing to a performance engineering role. After several years with the team, she was promoted to race engineer, collaborating closely with Ocon. In this role, Müller leads the engineering team on Ocon's car, oversees its performance, and serves as the primary point of communication during races. The race engineer position is regarded as one of the most critical in motorsport, requiring technical expertise, rapid decision-making, and effective communication under pressure.

Müller's promotion was based on her qualifications and work ethic. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu noted that Müller was selected for her problem-solving skills and determination to pursue comprehensive solutions. Ocon has also acknowledged the dedication Müller brings to improving car performance.

Müller's appointment highlights the increasing inclusivity within motorsport and reflects broader trends toward diversity in STEM fields. Her career serves as an example for aspiring engineers, demonstrating the opportunities available in Formula One and the wider motorsport industry.
