Larry Bowa

Larry Bowa is recognized for his extensive career in Major League Baseball, marked by perseverance and defensive skill. After being cut from his high school team and overlooked in the inaugural MLB Draft, Bowa went on to play 16 seasons in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets. He earned two Gold Glove Awards and led the National League in fielding percentage six times, setting a league record. Bowa also set a Major League record for shortstops with a .991 fielding average and was selected as a five-time National League All-Star. He led the league in triples and singles in separate seasons.

Bowa played a key role during the Phillies' championship era, providing consistent infield performance alongside third baseman Mike Schmidt. From his rookie season through 1981, the Phillies reached the postseason five times, ending a long-standing drought. Bowa batted .333 in the 1978 National League Championship Series and contributed significantly in 1980, hitting .316 in the NLCS and .375 in the World Series as the Phillies secured their first franchise title. He concluded his playing career with a .260 batting average, 2,191 hits, 318 stolen bases, and 2,247 games played. Bowa was inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame, named shortstop on the Phillies Centennial team, and included in the all-Veterans Stadium team.

Transitioning to management and coaching, Bowa managed the Phillies and San Diego Padres. In his first year managing the Phillies, he guided the team to a significant improvement and was named National League Manager of the Year and received the Sporting News NL Manager of the Year Award. His coaching career included roles as third base coach for the Anaheim Angels, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Bowa also served as bench coach for the USA team in the World Baseball Classic.

In broadcasting, Bowa worked as an analyst for ESPN's "Baseball Tonight," co-hosted a baseball talk show on XM Radio, and became a studio analyst for MLB Network, regularly appearing on "MLB Tonight." He hosted a weekly show with Chris Russo on Sirius XM and provided postgame analysis for Phillies games. Bowa later returned to the Phillies as bench coach and was promoted to senior advisor to the general manager. He remains active in Spring Training, working with infielders at both the Major League and Minor League levels, focusing on fielding fundamentals. With more than five decades in professional baseball as a player, manager, coach, and broadcaster, Bowa offers a comprehensive perspective on the sport.
