Lang Lang

Lang Lang is a Chinese classical pianist recognized for his influence in the global classical music industry. He began piano lessons at age 3 and gave his first public recital at 5. At 9, Lang entered Beijing's Central Music Conservatory, and at 13, he won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. To further his career as a concert pianist, Lang relocated to the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied under pianist Gary Graffman. His international profile rose significantly when, at 17, he substituted for André Watts at the Gala of the Century, performing Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach.

Lang was the first Chinese pianist engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and several leading American orchestras. He received the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival's inaugural Leonard Bernstein Award for musical talent. Lang has performed at major events, including the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Beijing, the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee concert. He has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Barenboim, and Andris Nelsons, and regularly performs with top orchestras worldwide. His cross-genre collaborations include performing with Metallica at the Grammy Awards and with Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer, highlighting his versatility in both classical and popular music.

Lang's discography spans solo and orchestral works. He was the featured soloist on the Golden Globe-winning score of "The Painted Veil." His album "Piano Book" has achieved over 1.2 billion streams globally and topped classical charts in multiple countries. The album "Lang Lang – Saint-Saëns" features solo and orchestral collaborations with Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons, earning two OPUS KLASSIK awards: Instrumentalist of the Year and Bestseller of the Year. Other notable recordings include "Live at Carnegie Hall," "The Chopin Album," "Liszt – My Piano Hero," and "Goldberg Variations." Lang overcame a significant arm injury, returning to the stage after a diagnosis of tendonitis and continuing his performance career.

Outside the concert hall, Lang is an advocate for music education and humanitarian causes. He established the International Music Foundation to expand access to music education for children, providing schools with pianos, teaching materials, mentorship, and performance opportunities. As a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund and a UN Messenger of Peace, Lang has been recognized by Time magazine among the world's 100 most influential people. He has received the highest cultural honors from the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, the Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Medal of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Lang is Grammy-nominated, a recipient of a Classic Brit award, several Echo Klassik prizes, and the first Chinese musician to receive the Victoire de la Musique Classique. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, reflecting his impact on classical music and music education worldwide.
